Election Day 2012: What Did Really It Mean

November 8, 2012 1 comment

Barack Obama has won! But Election Day 2012What does it really mean? While we are very focused on the fact that President Obama will remain in the White House for another four years, the Election Day results are full of complicated victories and valuable lessons.

It would be so easy to take Election Day at face value. I would argue it would be dangerous to do so. Barack Obama’s victory in the Electoral College will look like a landslide, but an examination of the popular vote indicates a much closer race. Further, the results also show a very polarized nation. The Obama campaign is a study of modern political science and demography. They understood what groups constituted their base, and then they pursued them relentlessly. One group that didn’t fall into the Obama base in large numbers was white men who didn’t work in the auto industry. Married white women also were not big supporters of Obama in 2012. They are angry, and the rest of the country should take some time to try to figure out why.

As America’s first Black president anticipates his second term, this nation must confront its resurgent comfort with racism and negative racial imagery and rhetoric. As a candidate, Mitt Romney had the opportunity to repudiate the nasty and unnecessarily inflammatory racial and racist rhetoric spewed by his campaign surrogates. But Romney looked the other way as John Sununu, Newt Gingrich, and Donald Trump took to social media and traditional media in a game of racist one-upmanship with each other. Hopefully, these three men will jump back into the clown car and drive away.

The role of the Latino community will take on mythic proportions as the story of the 2012 Elections will be retold…and rightfully so. After being discussed in a manner that was either dismissive or disgusting during the GOP primaries with talk of “self-deportation” or electrified fences, the Latino community was waiting for someone to say something reasonable. The executive order around the DREAM kids was policy change that the Latino community could believe in. Comprehensive immigration reform is overdue. Let’s hope everyone in Washington is finally gets it.

The LGBT community also knew it had a friend in President Obama, despite earlier frustration with him. President Obama repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” a policy that institutionalized keeping active duty military personnel in the closet. Conversely, a deployed soldier was booed during a GOP debate for asking a question. But the LGBT community and the world knew President Obama has the inclusive spirit of equality and justice contemplated when we say “We the People” when he expressed his personal support for marriage equality. Marriage equality initiatives fared well in states…maybe President Obama helped change some minds.

Women make up over 50% of the registered electorate. The first official act that President Barack Obama did in 2009 was to sign the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which makes it easier to sue based on gender discrimination. So Barack Obama hit the ground running where women are concerned and never stopped. The GOP presented themselves as the perfect foil to Obama, especially in the past two years. There were some, including me, who thought that this year was going to become the Year of the Woman. Sandra Fluke was called a “slut” by Rush Limbaugh. Mitt Romney offered some lukewarm response and Barack Obama called Ms. Fluke personally to offer support. There are myriad compelling and complicated cross currents involved in the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, which included attacks on privacy and access to birth control. The landmark legislation of the first term of Obama Administration, Obamacare, is extremely beneficial to women, whether it is for our own care, the care of a child, or the care of an aging, sick parent. The Affordable Care Act is now safe from threats to “repeal and replace.”

The election of 2012 is noteworthy for women because it is the year that we rejected efforts to destroy progress and go back to a time when women had little control over our bodies and our earning potential. Throughout the country there were candidates for the House of Representatives and US Senate who expressed extreme views that would have endangered the physical and economic lives of women. Those candidates LOST! The idea that in 2012 there was a debate about the definition of rape is offensive and shocking. Let’s clear it up once and for all: rape is rape because no means no. The law is clear about abortion, but the procedure should be available since it legal. The law is settled, let’s move on. I think equal pay is one area where we could focus our energy instead. The fact that the Violence Against Women Act remains in limbo is also unacceptable. But there are 20 women in the US Senate now, a record. Let’s hope that makes a difference and we can focus on issues that really matter to women and the nation.

President Obama will probably have the opportunity to appoint another Supreme Court justice. It would be amazing to see the first Black woman take her place in the highest court in the land. But there are many other firsts that could be achieved…first Asian-American, first Native-American, first open LGBT justice…there is need for diversity on the bench and President Obama is the person to achieve that goal.

The Obama campaign probably knew whether you preferred Coke, Pepsi or 7-Up. But the one thing they didn’t know was whether you would be subject to voter suppression or voter intimidation. This trend toward shaping the outcome of the election by controlling who can access the polls must stop. All of America benefitted from the fact that the efforts in Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio and other states were not successful. The people who would have been disproportionately impacted would have been the elderly and college students. The folks who invested the country and to whom we owe a debt on one end, and on the other end, we have the generation we are trying to teach the value of civic engagement and instill the habit of voting…these are the targets of the GOP campaign of voter suppression. It is shameful. It is ironic because we recently discovered that a GOP operative has allegedly engaged in voter registration fraud and that the GOP allegedly knew about it. There is such hope for our country because groups like the NAACP, the ACLU and the Advancement Project successfully fought these voter ID laws and state officials. Here’s what was amazing, voters were energized by the obstacles, not discouraged. It didn’t matter what they need to get to vote, they were going to vote. We need to remember that every Election Day and have the same passion and commitment.

Voters waited on line for hours to vote due to reduced early voting hours in Florida. Requests to expand hours in light of the long lines were denied.

Passion and commitment… In the final analysis, that was what made the difference. This election was the most expensive election in American history on the federal, state and local levels. At the top of the ticket, almost $2 billion was spent in pursuit of the White House, with the Romney campaign spending over $1 billion. This campaign was the first presidential campaign is the post-Citizens United world. The big money interests didn’t disappoint. They dumped money into the Romney campaign as though they thought they were buying the very best seats at the opera… Maybe they were. But all the money the world can’t buy passion and commitment. As Election Day drew closer, television ads lost their effectiveness, but passion and commitment motivated tens of thousands of volunteers who fanned out across the country to phone bank, knock on doors, and show up at rallies to support President Obama. Negative ads might move the news cycle, but a Get Out the Vote strategy moves voters.

Barack Obama won. This is great news for the country…all of the country. There are some folks who would have you believe that this is only good news for the people who want free stuff. Absurd. It’s time for the country to unite behind this president…for real this time. No clandestine dinners on Inauguration Night, please…

The “Fiscal Cliff” and potential sequestration loom on the horizon if all of us don’t get our act together and move forward. The time for fighting is over. The time for unity has arrived. This is the United States of America, and we have just re-elected our president. You may not respect the man, but respect the office.

Election Day 2012…What does it mean? It means that we have to realize that the country is changing is some wonderful ways…we embraced our better angels. But after some brief rest, it is time to get back to the work of restoring the nation economically, recovering from Hurricane Sandy, fixing big issues like immigration, the tax code, education and climate change and setting the course for a secure future.

On another day, there will be an autopsy on the Romney campaign, but not today. Today it is sufficient to say that President Obama won. GOP must do some soul-searching about its tactics and its lowest common denominator assumptions about the country.

We all voted. President Obama has reached 332 Electoral College votes. Now we must shift gears, and return to the work governing.

Let’s do what Americans do…Thrive.

Romney Sutra: The Numerous Tortured Political Positions of Mitt

October 26, 2012 1 comment

All three presidential debates have taken place. We have seen Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. There are less than two weeks left until Election Day. We should have a very clear sense of what policies the candidates are proposing, the direction they want to take the country – we should have a full measure of each man running for the office of President of the United States.

But we don’t have the full measure of one of the candidates, Mitt Romney. Instead, it is the numerous tortured political positions of Mitt – the Romney Sutra. It is confusion, entitlement, hypocrisy, dishonesty, chaos and deception.

It is amazing that we don’t know Willard Mitt Romney. He has been running for president since mid-way through his term as governor of Massachusetts, probably before. He began to run for Election Day 2012 on February 7, 2008, as he was suspending his 2008 Presidential Campaign.

It is amazing that we don’t know Willard Mitt Romney. He has been running for president since mid-way through his term as governor of Massachusetts, probably before. He began to run for Election Day 2012 on February 7, 2008, as he was suspending his 2008 Presidential Campaign. But as he was running, he was also hiding.

We have tried to vet Mitt Romney. There are the political masochists who watched all or most of the GOP Presidential Debates – all 20 of them. If the debates were challenging for the viewer, imagine what they must have been like for Mitt Romney. From May 5, 2011 to February 22, 2012, Mitt Romney pulled, twisted, turned, and stretched himself into so many different political positions that I wonder if he recognized himself.

In the course of those debates, the only constant was his steady march to the right. Romney struggled to make the GOP believe that he is “severely conservative.” I suppose STAUNCHLY conservative wouldn’t have been enough. Even linguistically, Romney comes across as lacking authenticity and sincerity.

There was no amount of pandering that was too callow. Who can forget Romney pandering to the non-voting trees in Michigan as being just the right height? I know the folks in the South felt an instant kinship to Romney when he started referring to them as “y’all,” and telling them about his breakfast of “cheesy grits.”

During the primaries, there were certain groups who should have paid very close attention to what Mitt Romney said, or equally important – didn’t say. Seniors, women, Latinos, LGBT, public service employees, college students: you should have been listening to the various contradictory positions that Romney took on the issues of importance to you. Blacks, veterans, the poor, the sick and disabled, the middle class with a job, cities, alternative energy (e.g., wind and solar), etc. if you were marginalized or excluded from Mitt Romney’s political discussion, you will be totally excluded from a Romney Administration. You probably won’t even get a binder…

But the pandering couldn’t remove the taint of his previous remarks and his record. Or could it? A senior Romney advisor, Eric Fehrnstrom, told us they would just shake and reset after the primaries, like an Etch-A-Sketch. Six months earlier, they telegraphed the desperate dash to the middle they were going to make in the first presidential debate, but all of us, President Obama included, were still unprepared when it came. But I am certain that the people of Massachusetts were not surprised at all.

The people of Massachusetts should know him best, right? He has lived there since he moved there to attend Harvard Law School and Business School. Bain Capital is headquartered there. Mitt Romney was governor of the state. With that much history in the state, you would think he would be way ahead in the polls in his home state. You would be wrong. According to the Real Clear Politics Average of Polls, President Obama is ahead of Mitt Romney by a staggering 16.3%.

Romney’s current poll results in Massachusetts are analogous to your significant other starting a committed, passionate relationship your sworn enemy.

But for folks who aren’t from the Bay State, we must stop and ask why? The citizens of Massachusetts DID have the chance to vet Mitt Romney. They saw him in action. Was he able to create millions jobs? Did he mystically change the political culture of the capital? Did he turn water into wine? The short answer is no, not so much.

Governor Romney’s Bain Capital years… key evidence for his ability to turn-around failing circumstances – well, we have to take his word for it because many of those businesses either went bankrupt or they are privately held, so we can’t see their books. We certainly haven’t been offered the opportunity to review the books of Bain Capital during the time that Mitt Romney was running the place.

We have only seen two years of tax returns. Why shouldn’t we trust what Mitt Romney has told us about his tax returns? He contorted himself into a convenient shape on this issue once before to help himself when he was running for governor. Once he won, we discovered the information he gave the citizens of Massachusetts about his taxes was false. By his own father’s standards, Mitt Romney has fallen short by his failure to produce multiple years of tax returns, which is sad and ironic since George Romney initiated the practice in 1967.

If you don’t know who Barack Obama is, love him or hate him, then you haven’t been paying attention. He told us more than we needed to know in the two books he wrote and published about himself BEFORE he became president. The President and First Lady continue to do an amazing job of raising well-adjusted, intelligent and poised young ladies in the white-hot glare of the fishbowl of the White House.

But President Obama isn’t running to be Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, the office pursued is President of the United States.

Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, also known as Bill Cosby

The track record President Obama has established in his first term is full of hits, but if we are honest, it has not been an unqualified success. I could take an entire blog just listing accomplishments achieved during the Obama Administration. But here is Pundit On Point Cliff Notes version: Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act signed; Consumer Financial Protection Bureau created; automobile industry revived; two women, including the first Latina, appointed to the US Supreme Court; after a century of effort, healthcare reform created; end of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Iraq War ended; and the man responsible for 9/11, Osama bin Laden, was brought to justice.

There is so much more. Ask the Dream kids, senior citizens, students with federally guaranteed student loans, women who heard Barack Obama state “rape is rape,” and the LGBT community who heard our president say he supported marriage equality.

There is more work to be done on the economy. No one is saying otherwise. But President Obama has been steady. In fact, it has been this type of even-keeled leadership that has provoked endorsements from conservative and careful sources, such as the Salt Lake Tribune and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Governor Romney has tried to strike all of the poses, but he has only succeeded at looking entitled and cheerlessly ambitious, while leaving us questioning his motives and sincerity. Pro-Choice v. Anti-Choice. Varmint Hunter v. Gun Control. Misogynist v. Binder-holder. Neo-Con Hawk v. Peacenik Dove. Severely Conservative v. Moderate. All of this hypocrisy is trapped in one person.

If you are everywhere in your principles, then you will get nowhere. As all of our parents told us, if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. We live in a time when the President of the United States must stand for more than their own ambition. Listen to the hint the people of Massachusetts are sending. The Romney Sutra, with its numerous, tortured, political positions of Mitt, will not unite and elevate our nation.

Vote. Engage this republic of ours. It will only get better when we all lift it up towards its highest purpose. Vote.

Tale of Two Douglases: Gabby v. Alyssa

September 8, 2012 1 comment

Gabrielle Douglas, “Golden Gabby” with her historic Individual All-Around Gymnastics Medal at the 2012 London Olympics

During the London Olympics, I was enthralled by the historic achievements of Gabrielle Douglas. Golden Gabby made history as she was winning gold medals. And she was poised in the face of the white-hot media glare. Even when others lost their minds over, of all stupid things, her hair, Golden Gabby stayed elegant, poised and mature beyond her years.

In the time since the Olympics, Golden Gabby’s future is secure due to the promise of many lucrative endorsement deals. But she appears to remain what she was, a sweet, extremely focused, loving teen aged girl.

Last night, we were introduced to another Douglas girl. Alyssa Douglas. I don’t know very much about Alyssa. Like Golden Gabby, she is a teen age girl, 16 years old to be exact. She is from a town near Cincinnati, Ohio. It is my understanding that she aspires to be a hairdresser. I also know that she spews violent, hateful rants about the President on Twitter. I include her name because she removed any privacy concerns when she publishes her violent post on Twitter. I reconsidered posting her photograph, which is easily found. Just because this child is irresponsible with her privacy, I won’t pile on since I already find her judgment flawed. If you want to know what she looks like, you can do the same google search I did. But I will tell you that Alyssa is white.

Yes, last night Alyssa Douglas took to Twitter to post a simple one line tweet that defies logic and common sense: “Someone needs to assassinate Obama…like ASAP. #DieYouPieceOfShit”

Alyssa Douglas’ Twitter account has been removed, but the damage has been done. I understand that for a time before her Twitter account was removed, she was actually GAINING Twitter followers for dumping that kind of random violent ideation onto the Twitterosphere. Wow. Does this CHILD realize what she has done?

I bet Golden Gabby, who experienced the savage effects of Twitter and Facebook, understood what this stupid child did. But even if Alyssa did not understand the consequences of the stupidity at the beginning of the day, by now I am certain she is grasping the severity of the situation.

You see, the Secret Service doesn’t like it when folks threat the President of the United States…even if those threats are issued on Twitter. A man was recently jailed in Charlotte for threatening the President on Twitter. Frankly, I hope they throw the book at this girl. At the age of 16, you are old enough to understand that your actions have consequences.

The Obama Family after President Obama delivers his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC.

As for the folks who would tell me that I have no sense of humor because Alyssa was only joking. My response is simple. You are right. I have no sense of humor when the life of a man with a wife and two children is concerned. Since someone issued a similar threat against Gov. Romney, I have the same no nonsense attitude. A call to arms to kill a public official is NEVER FUNNY. It’s stupid, reckless, and potentially criminal.

We live in a society where it is easier to buy a gun than it is to vote. In our country, a young man, who would go on to leave a trail of devastation in his wake, was able to purchase SIX THOUSAND ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION on the internet without raising any red flags. Have you bought cold medicine lately? It’s almost as difficult to do as voting, but guns and ammo…no worries. It is in that environment a 16 year old child takes to Twitter calling for the killing of our President.

The Secret Service has already been to her home. I hope she has spent the entire day getting to know them. I hope she has been scared the entire day.

Alyssa’s parents don’t escape my notice in this. Hate like what young Alyssa is spewing is learned. So I say, cart the whole stupid family off to jail, just to be safe.

Gabby and Alyssa… Two girls both 16 years old… Gabby has already accomplished more than many would ever dare to dream, and in the process, she has gained international fame. She represents the very best of aspiration, faith and diligence. We know that Gabby was surrounded by love and support, even when things were challenging.

Alyssa is at the other end of the spectrum. By her small and hateful thinking, which she had the bad judgment to post to Twitter, she will become infamous maybe on an international scale…for wishing a man dead. The irony is that the man she is wishing dead is internationally famous as a champion for hope and change. Alyssa strikes me a symbol of how entrenched racism and hate are…even in someone so young.

Someone ask Gov. Romney what he thinks about the tale of two Douglases. I wonder if there is any honesty left in Romney to recognize how much GOP dog whistle politics probably played a part in the downfall of Alyssa, and that Gabby succeeded in spite of them?

Oh, in case you had any doubt, Gabby wins this gold medal, by a mile!

I hope that you never forgot my open letter to the Secret Service. I hope they didn’t either.

Keep the President and his family safe.

Golden Gabby: Dream Realized, New Dreams Born

August 3, 2012 8 comments

Gabrielle “Golden Gabby” Douglas stands on the podium after receiving historic gold medal

In 2012, it is a complicated time for Blacks in America. Hate speech spills out over the Internet like acid, working to burn and destroy everything in its path. A young Black man was gunned down in April for “walking while Black.” The first African-American President of the United States is disrespected by political rivals who would question his patriotism rather than challenge his policy. There are still so many of society’s peaks, political, economic and social for the Black community to reach, even for one of us, despite the fact that so many are so familiar with life’s valleys. Yes, it is a complicated time to be Black in America.

But today was simple. Today is about a young woman, named Gabrielle Douglas, who picked up the team, formerly known as the “Fab Five,” but rechristened by their hero and leader, Gabby, as the “Fierce Five,” and carried them to the peak of Olympic glory – team gold in women’s gymnastics. For the American women to win the team gold was historic, in and of itself, as it had only been done ONCE before in 1996. But for Gabby Douglas to win the team gold and the individual all-around gold…she made history twice. Not only is Gabby the first US gymnast to win the all-around gold and team gold in the same Olympics, she is the first Black woman to win all-around gold IN OLYMPIC HISTORY. Oh yes, she joins a very small sorority that consists of only four women, including Gabby, US women who have won the Olympic gold medal in the all-around competition in gymnastics.

Golden Gabby takes flight en route to her historic gold medal

Gabby competed for her gold medal in fine style, as she has through this entire competition – with fearless elegance. She took first place after the first rotation, and never looked back. She had nerves of steel, and composure of that never indicated any sense of stress or strain. She kept her cool and rose to meet her destiny and place in history, as others were faltering. She vaulted, flew, jumped, stuck those landings and gave us a smile that had enough wattage to assure us of her star power. When it was over, the Russians didn’t have enough to catch her.  Gabby was where she had been all day…ahead, but now with the gold medal around her neck.

The end of this story should be a wonderful picture of this smiling, excellent 16-year old who sacrificed her childhood in pursuit of her dream. She can leave London with more hardware since she qualified to compete for medals on the uneven bars and the balance beam.

But there are two other stories to be told with the Gabby Douglas story. I hate to bring it up on a day that should be about this wonderful girl’s achievement.  Both of these other issues tell us something about us, about America – media and hair.

First, I was intrigued by how the media virtually ignored Gabby after the team won the gold. Any other storyline of the Fierce Five was more compelling to the media than Gabby. The New York Times barely mentioned Gabby in their write up of the historic gold medal win, instead choosing to focus on a young woman who didn’t make the cut. Yes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. As a Black person, your excellence must be that much more outstanding than your white peer’s, otherwise, it will not be deemed noteworthy. Here is a case in point: A young Black woman has just proven her excellence to the world on the Olympic stage, and the camera couldn’t find her, reporters’ words barely mentioned her.  This fact says nothing about whether or not Gabby is excellent, because she clearly is, but it reminds us that we have work to do with media’s coverage of positive stories of the Black community.

Gabby’s hair… Now this is one that made my blood boil. This elegant, poised, talented, excellent young woman achieved more in the past few days than most folks will in their entire lives, and folks are zeroing in on her hair? The arrow to my heart was that this stupid, useless critique was coming from the Black community. At a time when we should be looking at this young woman with pride for her achievement, some sad, small-minded folks on Facebook and Twitter can only focus on her hair. This is a mirror moment. The way that individuals in the Black community perceive Gabby Douglas says a lot about that person. This young woman has MADE HISTORY, but folks are talking about her hair. If you are focused on her hair and feeling shame, it is a reflection of your own self-loathing. If you see her achievement, hard work and poise, then I would argue that you have a better sense of pride in yourself and sense of hope for the Black community as a people. Once again, it has nothing to do with this young woman who appears to have such a very grown up sense of self, sacrifice, faith, commitment…and now joy and achievement.

Golden Gabby with her Individual All-Around Olympic Gold Medal in Women’s Gymnastics

The Flying Squirrel has transformed. She went into the Olympic crucible and came out…Golden Gabby. She peaked and flourished at the perfect time. Her reward is a place in history. Unfortunately, she also picked up some misguided haters for her troubles as well. In the world of affirmations, there is one that says, “Make your haters your motivators.”

So Golden Gabby, don’t change a thing! Just know that tonight, there are countless little black girls AROUND THE WORLD who watched you and now believe that they can become an gold medal winning Olympic gymnast. You gave these girls an incredible gift.

Golden Gabby, from the realization of your dream, new dreams are born.

VAGINA CORP: A Rise to Power

Women! We have been going about this all wrong! We have been asking lawmakers to respect our privacy and our right to choose our reproductive fate. We have made it clear that our reproductive health, in the form of annual screenings like mammograms and pelvic exams with pap smears, are extremely important to us. In case there was any doubt about what we meant about “reproductive health,” we told them we were talking about our vaginas. You would think we were talking about Voldermort, because evidently, the vagina is the body part that must not be named.

But the men in state legislatures who were bold enough to create legislation that was obsessed with vaginas were never mature enough or man enough to say the word without devolving to locker room humor and innuendo. But when cloaked in euphemism, like “lady parts,” law makers in Virginia are willing to insert themselves into women’s vaginas by way of an unnecessary medical procedure, which is now required before the legal termination of a pregnancy.

Michigan is even more squeamishly hypocritical. During a recent floor debate on proposed legislation where Michigan legislators where trying to force their way into the vaginas of Michigan women by banning abortion after 20 weeks unless a woman’s life is in danger, State Rep. Lisa Brown bucked the polite, yet stupid, political lexicon

State Rep. Brown’s reward for stating the obvious and speaking the outrage that millions of women have been feeling since these laws began springing up across the country… State Representative Lisa Brown of Michigan, a duly elected public official, was “gaveled down” as out of order for failing to recognize the “decorum” of the House of Representatives of Michigan. Her punishment? The men of the House of Representatives of Michigan silenced her, censored her for the debate of a bill on school employees’ retirement, which is a hot button issue in every state.

In a political climate where a member of the US Congress yells “You Lie” at the President of the United States during the State of the Union address, or 14 members of the GOP allegedly plot the downfall of the 44th president as he dances at his Inaugural Ball, or a minority of the majority party are willing to hold the entire government and economy hostage… I have a hard time with anyone trying to offer lectures about decorum for the use of the anatomically correct term for the body part in question.

Women, here is how we change the game. We incorporate our vaginas! As “lady-parts,” they are powerless. As Vagina Corp., they can rule the world. America is less of a republic or democracy, and more of a corporatocracy. We can thank Mittens Romney for the idea. After all, it was Mittens who told us, “Corporations are people, my friend.” As corporations, Vaginas would be able to enter into contracts, own property, incorporate other corporations and limited liability companies, sue, be sued… Vaginas could be like Mitt Romney but with more compassion and empathy.

Vaginas are already the birthplace of all human power in a purely factual sense. What I am proposing is a way to ensure that vaginas keep a measure of power and control, and not become victims of men who forget where they literally came from.

I am still trying to figure out if Vagina Corp. should be seemingly innocent corporate citizen, or if it would be an activist corporation like those who were members of ALEC or the Financial Services Roundtable. If Vagina Corp. is going to rise to power, it would have to interact with power, just like the Bank of America, WalMart or Halliburton does.

Vagina Corp. would have First Amendment rights. So there wouldn’t be any whispers about vagina anymore, because Vagina Corp. would be a force to be reckoned with. The key First Amendment right to be exercised would be the right to political speech, of course. One of the first items of the Vagina Corp. agenda would be the formation of a Super PAC. All of the politicians who rushed to defile “lady-parts” with legislation requiring intrusive and medically unnecessary procedures would suddenly stop and have much more respect and consideration for Vagina Corp.

Vagina Corp. would be an economic force. Let’s be clear; control over reproduction is an economic issue. Vagina Corp., by harnessing that power, would then become a force in the economy. The Vagina Corp. Super PAC would be able to pressure legislators to create bills that would do simple things like guarantee equal pay for equal work. Vagina Corp. would be able either to provide access to capital, like a venture capitalist, or pressure the financial services industry to remember that they are supposed to circulate money, not just hold it on their “fortress” balance sheets. With more woman-controlled dollars in the economy, woman-owned businesses would flourish more than they already do.  According to the US Census Bureau, women-owned firms accounted for 28.7% of all nonfarm businesses in the United States in 2007.

For anyone who thinks this is a ridiculous idea, I say “not so fast.” After all, America is the country of legal innovation and flexibility when it comes to financial matters. America came up with the junk bond, the sub-prime mortgage-backed security, and collateralized debt obligations… If we can make people believe those legal and economic fictions are profitable, despite their extremely dangerous and risky realities, then incorporating vaginas is child’s play.

The only reason not to incorporate vaginas would be the same reason that women’s reproductive health is in danger in the first place…there is an innate recognition of the power of a woman’s vagina. These legislators must believe that the vagina, like Voldermort, possesses a powerful dark magic that must be contained at all costs. And it begins with saying its name…Vagina!

Let’s go to Delaware and make their worst nightmares come true. Let’s create the first Vagina Corp. and begin our rise to power. First order of business… Destroy the little blue pills.

BARACK OBAMA: President of Cool

The media could be full of REAL NEWS. The War on Women is being waged openly in votes taken on the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. The Secret Service evidently haggled with hoes in other countries, so the entire culture of the agency needs to be reexamined. Student loan interest is being politicized, and if nothing constructive is done, interest rates will double on July 1st. Most forgettable of all was news that Newt Gingrich realized what all of us knew months ago, he has no chance of becoming president, and will therefore drop out of the race.

But none of that mattered because this was the Week of Cool, which will conclude with the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, April 28th.

Cool… If President Obama is Cool personified, and this week was the Week of Cool, then he had a great week, right?

Cool is defined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “marked by steady dispassionate calmness and self-control; lacking ardor or friendliness,” or “SLANG- a) very good: excellent; b) fashionable, hip.”  Why I find this subject so intriguing is that the President’s opponents want to have it both ways. They want to have us believe that President Obama is TOO cool in every sense of the word.  But after the Week of Cool, so it became impossible to believe that Willard Mitt Romney could ever be president of the country that gave birth to Cool.

After Candidate “No Drama” Obama became President Obama, we began to hear that he was aloof and too intellectual in his approach to his responsibilities in the Oval Office. I understand that we had to adjust after eight years of George W. Bush, whose style was less…scholarly. If the President was logical and methodical, then he was called “Spock-like.” If the President’s excellent educational credentials and background as a Constitutional Law professor caused him to seek information through rigorous questioning, also known as the Socratic Method (the bane of any First Year law student’s existence), then it was further affirmation that he was from the Planet Vulcan.

The GOP should remember that this President has been forged in the fires of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, crushing Health Care and Wall Street Reform debates that he won, ending the War in Iraq, and the longest war in American history in Afghanistan. All while the country and world is undergoing tremendous social, economic and political upheaval. Barack Obama is a fighter. I thought of cool fighters: Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee were the first ones to come to mind. Both were charming opponents who were amazing, smart, devastating fighters…and cool. That is Barack Obama as well.

But what the President’s opponents really wanted, was the stretch him out of his character, into a caricature. They wanted to see him in the stereotypical posture they could sell to America’s fears, the “Angry Black Man.” But he would never oblige them. His cultural competence was too great, the job he has is too significant to give into such self-indulgence. Barack Obama is a political Jackie Robinson. But don’t let the Cool taste fool you.  Barack Obama must be “marked by steady dispassionate calmness and self-control.” When he gave the order to kill Osama Bin Laden in his compound in Pakistan, President Obama “lacked ardor or friendliness.” A dangerous world demands a president who so cool that he has more to offer than “no apologies.”

But in the Week of Cool, the GOP doesn’t want us to remember the President’s intellectual gifts or his icy decision making capability. No, they want us to remember him as the President of Cool America, as in fashionable, hip, and exclusive. In Cool America, Jay-Z, Kim Kardashian and Ryan Seacrest could have Cabinet-level positions. The GOP, the chronically unhip kids, want to take us all back to high school. They are trying to make Barack Obama a cliché, the popular kid who was too cool to notice the average kids and their problems. The first 1% that we all experienced. They keep pointing to the President’s appearance on Jimmy Fallon as an indication of how lightly his takes his responsibilities, but this is fictious as fairness in the Ryan Budget.

I say the President’s Slow Jam of the News was a stroke of genius. He brought a rush of attention to an issue that was getting swept under the rug by Congress. Now college students realize what is about to happen to them. More importantly, they understand that they have a say. President Obama may have created the newest generation of activists by that late night appearance. The President made it “fashionable” and “hip” to discuss student loans this week. I say “Bravo!”

According to Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Coolhunt,” there are  three rules of Cool: 1) the quicker the chase of Cool , the faster the its flight ; 2) you can’t just manufacture Cool out of thin air; and 3) you have to be Cool to know Cool. The White House Correspondents’ Dinner will be held on Saturday. One of the best things about Cool is its ability to create the inside joke because it “knows Cool.” When President Obama and Jimmy Fallon Slow Jammed the News, President was making a serious policy point and most of America got the cool, inside joke. If you didn’t, now you know why.

DON’T HAGGLE WITH HOES: An Open Letter to the Secret Service

April 20, 2012 8 comments

Dear Secret Service Director, Mark Sullivan:

What a mess! I started off making jokes about the situation just like everyone else, “Secret Service doesn’t mean that you get serviced in secret.” The “wheels up, rings off” concept was ready-made for the late night comedians, and they pounced. The other pundits were still brewing last week’s tempest in their teapots (see “Mommy Cage Match: Romney vs. Reality”), so there was a lag time. Comedians like Jon Stewart saw comedy gold in the Madonna/Ho Transition the media was undertaking.

The politicians in Washington tend to move with the pundits, so you had a brief reprieve, which is over now. They have descended on the Secret Service like a pack of hungry wolves. Unfortunately, I have no sympathy for you or the agents under your command.

The Secret Service agents in Cartegena, Columbia forgot several important things. They forget something I heard is a key maxim, and it led to their downfall: DON’T HAGGLE WITH HOES. She earned her money in a manner that most of us would agree is…unorthodox, yet demanding work. As a result, she was not going to leave the Hotel Caribe without the money that was due to her.

I find this situation troubling for a variety of reasons. It raises several issues and concerns: the way this woman was treated and the way the President is protected.

The agent who caused the whole sordid affair to be exposed wanted to pay a professional $28 for $800 worth of services. The law has a concept called “quantum meruit” or unjust enrichment, which is defined by Black’s Law Dictionary as “An equitable doctrine, based on the concept that no one who benefits by the LABOR and materials of another should be unjustly enriched thereby…the law implies a PROMISE to pay a reasonable amount for the labor and materials furnished, even absent a specific contract therefor.” Prostitution is legal in Columbia. So the woman who was cheated out of $772 for engaging in lawful business has every right to demand payment. She had every right to go to the police. But the Secret Service agents who procured her services did not have ANY RIGHT to do so. They simply shouldn’t have been doing that. They were in Columbia on official business of the highest order – protecting the President of the United States.

You would think that these Secret Service agents would remember the Parable of Former Governor Eliot Spitzer. Also known as “Client-9,” Eliot Spitzer was tripped up because he wanted to have a credit of $1,100 on record with the agency, despite paying for the “escort services” of Ashley Dupree with $4400 in cash. The scandal, as you are aware, ended the very promising political career of Eliot Spitzer. But I guess since it was “wheels up, rings off,“ that meant that common sense also took a holiday in Columbia..

Here is my greatest concern.  Haggling with Hoes could have put the President’s life in jeopardy. The hoes with whom your agents were haggling could have decided that rather than wasting their time waiting for payment from the cheap Americans, they could simply steal some valuable, classified information that could have been left lying around and sell it to the highest bidder. In a country that was known for narco-terrorists like the late Pablo Escobar and Medellin drug cartel, this lapse in judgment was especially troubling. Renegade, the Secret Service Code Name for President Obama, came to Columbia not knowing how vulnerable he was. At the same time, Renaissance, the First Lady, and Radiance and Rosebud, Sasha and Melia, could also have been compromised. We don’t know. The Secret Service has a reputation of being the only thing between a lunatic and these individuals. We have operated through the years with the assumption that they would always do the right thing. Now we have reason to doubt that these men and women are capable of operating with the judgment needed for the task.

Director Sullivan, we forgave you for the security breach when the fame hungry, reality show star wannabes, Tareq and Michaele Salahi scammed their way into a state dinner. That was an alarming, yet low-stakes, breach. But this was on foreign soil. The Secret Service has not only embarrassed itself, it has embarrassed President Obama, and the United States.

The fact that two supervisors, Greg Stokes and David Chaney, and an agent have left the Secret Service as a result of this scandal is small comfort. Reports three agents resigned today and that more firings are imminent are also inadequate. The rhetoric directed at this president is especially violent. Remember that Candidate Barack Obama received protection from the Secret Service at a historically early point in his campaign due to the threats he received. As President, those threats have increased in number and intensity. The responsibility of the Secret Service is heightened.

Director Sullivan, if a single hair on the head of Renegade, Renaissance, Radiance or Rosebud is harmed, I will hold you and every man and woman in your command PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE.

Maybe your agents need to re-read the Vision Statement of the Secret Service: The vision of the United States Secret Service is to uphold the tradition of excellence in its investigative and protective mission through a dedicated, highly-trained, diverse, partner-oriented workforce that employs progressive technology and promotes professionalism. Agents Hiring Hoes while on a security detail for the President is not professional. Agents Haggling with hoes while on a security detail for the President is not excellent.

The Congressional wolves are barking and scratching at your door. Your agents need to stop haggling with hoes. Protect the President.

Sincerely yours,

Pundit On Point
